Years in current sport? Just over a year. Why are you playing Beach Handball? I play as a gift to my late nephew who never had the opportunity to enjoy sports. He was born and passed away a little over a week later last April. I wear #26 in honor of him.
Everybody is in love with USA, but we are interested in knowing how the sport is getting bigger and more famous. We are holding more tournaments in the US and also trying to develop a league to draw in more players.
About USA Championship
Explain us how does the USA championship work. How many tournaments do you have in your country? How many teams?
The USA Beach Handball Championship is still pretty small with around 20 teams both men’s and women’s, some being international teams. We are currently working on trying to have a larger more elite level USA Championship with National teams from other countries.
Teams in the USA? Still growing, we don’t have lots of club teams set up across the country yet like most other countries.
All the info that you would like to share with Beachandball.com and your experience of living BeacHandball in the USA.:
I am very grateful to USA Team Handball for deciding to branch out and help create USA Beach Handball. It is a true honor to be able to represent our country. We started last year with a small group of young, inexperienced but gutsy and hard working players. We overcame a lot to win the Pan American Championship in Venezuela, especially since it was our first real competition as a team. We were extremely close to competing at the top bracket at the World Championships in Budapest and I’m certain with a little more time and tournament experience we will soon be raising eyebrows internationally. It has been a lot of fun to learn the sport, come together and build a team from scratch. It has also been a fantastic surprise how the international community has welcomed us. We’ve made so many friends across the world in such a short period of time. I am so thankful for the international embrace we have received and am looking forward building on these friendships it in the future.
About USA National team:
How are you getting ready for the beachandball with the national team? We all do strength & conditioning on our own. We have a fluctuating practice schedule based around the tournaments we attend. Some team members have traveled internationally and joined foreign club teams to play in their National Championships. Ie: Ebiye and I just played in the Australian Beach Championships the end of February. We sent small teams to Brazil last November and this past January to play in some Brazilian tournaments.
Is USA doing tournaments with another countries or special championships? We are currently planning to go play in a couple tournaments this summer in Europe. We have a couple countries coming to the US to train with us this summer and fall.
Is it difficult to make supporters in a country full of top sports like NBA, NFL…? Yes, especially when most people do not even know about indoor handball.
What do you think the federation and/or the national team can do to improve your presence in the next Olympic games 2024? As a team, we need to win and become a top team. We need to draw in more top-level athletes from other sports. We need to compete internationally more and improve.
Personal Comments (The moment to show us your Beach handball soul)
Do you think USA could also be so powerful in Beachandball, like it already is now in basketball or another sport? Absolutely. The talent is here, athletes just don’t know the sport exists.
How do you see your country and your national team in the next 10 years? We will be extremely competitive with the best.
Do you have any other concerns we didn’t ask you about? No. Thank you for reaching out and including the USA in your article!!! Thanks for your time and your attention.
